Mediation is about the compromise of the participants’ positions and the promotion of their needs and interests. When properly conducted, each participant will gain a useful and productive insight of their own needs and interest and in those of the other participants.
My role as a mediator is to assist the participants in workshopping solutions by being tough on the issues and problems, and gentle on the participants. It is about the parties finding their own common solutions in the promotion of their needs and interest. This is why most disputes and conflicts can be resolved or compromised.
I favour loosely the facilitative model of mediation and where appropriate the settlement model of mediation. There is no set approach except that the participants, issues and conflicts will dictate the approach.
